A Great Start

Yesterday I made a short visit to the Warren at Shouldham and tho it's a rather quiet time of year for fungi, I was really pleased to finish the trip with a first for me. Not only are these early summer visits a continued source of fresh air and relaxation but also a great way of finding what I consider to be areas that have good promise later in the autumn months when a large selection of our mushroom and fungus friends are bountiful. I look to see where certain trees grow as that is a huge advantage when looking for fungi. You can waste many hours just walking through woodland with the hope of finding some interesting mushroom or fungus, but knowing which tree has a relationship with which fungi may often save a lot of those wasted hours.     To do this we need to learn our trees and which fungi are found close to then. Introduction

Welcome to my fungi diaries, where I will be recording the results of my fungi hunts. Some will be carried out in very local locations such my home village of Upwell and neighbouring villages, on other trips I hope to explore a little further afield in places such as Sandringham and my favourite fungi area, Shouldham Warren.    The idea is to keep a record for my own pleasure and if anybody else finds this blog of interest then that too is fine. I will of course be posting pictures of any finds and the location too. There will be times of disappointment and hopefully some exciting times when I spot some of those fungi on my "wants" list.    So it is with hope and great expectation that I set off on the journey where I may say hello to the great Fly Agaric, Penny Buns or the tiny Birdsnest Fungus, please feel free to come along for the ride.
